A police pursuit of a stolen car on Auckland's north western motorway has ended with emergency services cutting free a person from a car that crashed when drivers slowed down to watch the chase.
Police say officers were pursuing the stolen car shortly before 8pm on Thursday, as it was being driven the wrong way on the north western motorway, city bound.
They say the officers abandoned the pursuit due to heavy traffic and the car was stopped with road spikes.
Three people then abandoned the car, one of them trying to escape by water in a nearby inlet.
All three are now in custody.
Police say the pursuit caused a large number of rubber-neckers with one car causing a nose to tail accident.
Two people suffered moderate injuries in the crash.
