A man is in hospital with a serious injury after being assaulted in Wellington suburb Stokes Valley overnight.

The man, 33, was taken to Wellington Hospital following the attack just after midnight in the Hanson Grove area of Stokes Valley.
He had a serious head injury.
Police said they would investigate.
They will conduct a scene examination today and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
