He Kakano - the seed - was blessed by kaumātua in a dawn ceremony this morning at the city's Town Basin marina.

The spiral structure known as a folly was designed to give local tradespeople some practice in Hundertwasser-style building techniques.

It has been approved by the late artist's foundation in Vienna.

The completion of the artwork will be celebrated with speeches, school choirs, kapa haka and a solo performance by Whangarei National MP Shane Reti.
