Rogue sparkies prompt ministerial warning

People have been urged to check that electricians are registered before hiring them to do work in their home.

The warning comes from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment after two people were fined a total $9262 for doing potentially dangerous electrical repairs.

An Auckland man who did unauthorised work on a yacht was fined more than $6000 as well as costs.

And a Petone man who did unauthorised work at a school in Upper Hutt was fined more than $3000 plus costs.

A Ministry official said the public should always check the certification and photo identitfication of an electrician before they began work.
