Three charged over Napier courtroom brawl

6:08 pm on 25 November 2008

Three people have been charged over a brawl at the High Court in Napier.

The fight broke out on Tuesday as three men appeared in court over an attack on a gang house in Hastings in June.

Shortly after Justice Wild remanded the trio in custody on grievous bodily harm charges, three supporters in the public gallery attempted to hug them before they left court.

One of the prisoners then repeatedly punched a security guard before a fight broke out, with the supporters attempting to join in.

Several tables in the courtroom were overturned and water jugs went flying.

A member of the court security staff received medical treatment after the attack.

Police charged the supporters with disorderly behaviour. They will appear in Napier District Court on Wednesday.
