Record number of calls to Quitline

Quitline received a record number of calls on Thursday from people wanting to quit smoking.

Parliament increased the excise tax on cigarettes by 10% on Wednesday night.

A charitable trust that runs Quitline says advisors spoke to more than 750 people by the end of Thursday.

The previous daily record of 610 calls was recorded in 2008 when an anti-smoking advertising campaign was launched.

Quit Group chief executive Paula Snowden says the majority of callers said they had been thinking of quitting for some time and the tobacco price increase had given them the incentive they needed.
