Chris Cahill was elected at the Police Association's annual conference today and will serve a three-year term.

The Auckland-based detective inspector will take over from outgoing president Greg O'Connor, who served 21 years in the role.

Mr O'Connor said Mr Cahill had worked in areas from Invercargill to Auckland throughout his long career.

"I believe Chris will bring a high level of commitment and experience to the role," he said.

"He has shown himself to be a strong advocate for police as an Association member and representative, and I am confident he will ensure that the voice of police officers will continue to be heard in the law and order environment."

Last year Mr O'Connor announced he would not seek re-election.
