'Light' tremble in Wellington region

Central New Zealand was rattled by a 4.4 earthquake just on midday.

Centred near Wellington it was felt as a slow shake, ending with a sharp jolt.

It was centred 20 kilometres north-west of the capital at a depth of 40 kilometres, and GeoNet describes its intensity as 'light'.

On the GeoNet website 4400 have reported feeling it, with most describing it as weak.

People from Auckland to Invercargill said they felt the shake.

There are no reports of damage.
