26 fire trucks, four helicopters and 100 fire fighters have been battling the blaze in Henderson, which broke out shortly after 10pm. Fire crews will spend the night dampening down hot spots.

Smoke could be seen in the area for several kilometres but there were no reports of injuries.

Auckland's civil defence said it was the monitoring a fire and asked people to stay away from the area.

They said people who were nearby should close their windows and doors.

Fire communications said hazards that crews were facing included fallen power cables, explosive debris, water run off, dense smoke and unknown chemicals.

Police said all train services in the area had been stopped as a result of the fire.
