The crash in Pukehina, halfway between Tauranga and Whakatane, seriously injured the 11-month-old boy, his two-year-old sister and their 33-year-old mother.

The girl is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato hospital, while the boy is in Auckland's Starship Hospital.

Tauranga Hospital said the mother's condition improved overnight and she was now in a stable condition.

Police believe fatigue may have been a factor in the crash.
