The son of New Zealand wine magnate Jim Delegat has been sentenced to community work and ordered to pay reparations for seriously assaulting a policewoman.
Nikolas Delegat, 19, has pleaded guilty to assaulting an Otago University campus watch officer, and a police officer, in March last year.
The officer was punched in the head four times and was off work for two months.
Delegat had been drinking heavily in Dunedin when he got angry at comments made about his girlfriend, and lashed out, breaking a window, and punching those who tried to restrain him, the Dunedin District Court was told today.
Delegat had applied for a discharge without conviction, but Judge Kevin Phillips rejected that, saying his offending was more than moderately serious.
The judge sentenced Delegat to 300 hours of community work and a reparations payment of $5000 to the injured policewoman.
Nikolas Delgat is the son of Jim Delegat, who is the executive chairman of Delegat Group, which produces the Delegat and Oyster Bay wines.
