Police have released the name of a man they are looking for after officers were shot at and a police car was stolen in Whangarei.

Armed officers have been involved in a large-scale hunt for the man since he fired shots at two unarmed officers in Whangarei and took off in a police car.

He later stole another car, which was found abandoned in Maungaturoto, and was last seen in Kaiwaka.

Police said they were looking for Joshua Mason Kite, 33, who was considered armed and dangerous.

They were searching the greater Auckland region but the man could have connections as far away as Wellington, police said.

They described him as in his 30s, 1.8m tall, with brown curly hair.

Police said they had no reason to believe the public was directly in danger but anyone who saw the man should call 111.
