The cyclist who died after a collision with a car on the West Coast this morning was a local teenager.

Police have named him as 16-year-old River Caldwell, a local student living in Hokitika.

The crash happened on State Highway 6, 500 metres south of 1 Mile Line Road near Aratuna, about 6.45am.

Mr Caldwell was struck by a northbound vehicle while on his bike.

Police said while a truck and a car were at the scene, each vehicle's involvement in the crash was still being investigated.

Both lanes on SH6 were now open.
