Two balaclava-wearing men used a sledgehammer to smash down the door of a Christchurch bakery, in an early morning robbery.

Police said the robbery happened about 1am, in the suburb of Edgeware.

The men targeted two tills before fleeing after being confronted by a staff member, who was not injured in the incident.

It has not yet been established what was taken, police said.

The men are described as tall and Pakeha, wearing dark clothes and balaclavas.
