Roading manager admits taking thousands in bribes

A former council roading manager has admitted taking thousands of dollars in bribes from an engineering firm.

Barrie Kenneth James George pleaded guilty to two charges at the High Court in Auckland this morning.

As group manager for transport for the Rodney District Council in 2008, he was instrumental in awarding an engineering company more than $8 million in contracts.

George, 69, has admitted taking more than $57,000 of travel and accommodation paid for by the engineering firm.

Later, in 2010 when Rodney District Court became part of the Auckland Council, he awarded millions of dollars worth of contracts to the same company.

He has admitted accepting an additional $46,000 in travel and accommodation.

George will be sentenced next month.
