Israel reopens NZ embassy

9:21 am on 20 April 2010

Israel has reopened its embassy in New Zealand after an eight-year absence.

The Israeli government closed its embassy in Wellington in 2002 for financial reasons, and has been searching for a suitable site to re-establish it for the past few months.

The difficulty was in finding a building with enough security.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the Israeli embassy is now operating from an address on the Terrace, in the central city.

A new ambassador will be formally presented with his credentials by the Governor-General on 7 May.
