It's the second blaze in an abandoned building in central Christchurch in just over a week.

Southern fire communications shift manager Lyn Crossom said they received the call about 3.15am.

Firefighters could see smoke coming out of the six-storey building on Hereford Street when they arrived.

Six fire trucks attended and it didn't take long to put the fire out.

Ms Crossom said the fire was suspicious and the police were on site.

No one was injured.

It followed a large fire in a building on Lichfield and Tuam streets last Thursday.
