New plans for revamping Christchurch's Victoria Square have been revealed, following a public outcry over the previous makeover plans for the popular public area.

Victoria Square, close to the badly damaged Town Hall in central Christchurch, was one of the few landmarks to avoid damage during the earthquakes.

Despite this, the now defunct Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority planned to redevelop the land last year, including removing heritage items.

The plans received 96 percent negative feedback during public consultation.

The new plan will repair and maintain heritage items such as Bowker Fountain and add more to reflect the area's Māori heritage.

The plan is out now for public consultation.
