Lower Hutt assault leaves man in intensive care

A man is in intensive care after being assaulted in Lower Hutt early on Sunday morning.

Police said the man was attacked at 3:27am on Seddon Street in the suburb of Naenae and remains in Hutt Hospital with a serious head injury.

They said he is unlikely to survive.

A 27-year-old man from the Hutt Valley has been charged with assault and will appear in the district court in Lower Hutt today. Police said further charges were possible.

They said the victim had been chased by a group who were attending a 21st birthday party on nearby Cleland Crescent.

Police believe the party was attended by over 30 people and are appealing to any witnesses from the party or to the assault and subsequent events.
