A car club is proposing a $500,000 burnout park in Christchurch, saying it will help get boy racers off the streets.
The Southern Car Culture club wants to build a skid pad, a car park for spectators and safety barriers at Ruapuna raceway, on the outskirts of the city.
Chairman Nadra Gosling says members, who are boy racers turned car enthusiasts, can be an example to the boy racing fraternity.
The club came up with the idea after a police officer was attacked by a group of boy racers in Christchurch last year.
Some local politicians support the proposal, but residents spoken to by Radio New Zealand say they will oppose it.
