The new schools and extra classrooms address roll growth in Hamilton and Tauranga, where the number of students pushed schools close to or beyond their classroom capacity last year.

In Tauranga, $18m will be spent on a new school for 650 students in the Pyes Pa area and $2.5m on six classrooms at three other schools - Oropi School, Welcome Bay School and Maungatapu School.

Hamilton gets $25m for a 700-student school built as a public-private partnership, as well as $4m to make room for 200 more pupils at Endeavour Primary School.

Hawke's Bay schools will get $4m for eight extra classrooms - four at Havelock North Primary School, and two each for Te Mata School and Lucknow School.

The announcement is the latest in a series spelling out how the government is allocating the $882m in property funding announced in last week's Budget.

It also includes $19m for new classrooms and a school relocation in Northland; $153m for five new schools and for new classrooms in Auckland; more than $276m for schools in Canterbury including two new schools and the rebuild of two relocated schools; and $4m for new classrooms in the Wellington region.
