A man who admitted murdering a South Otago teenager has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minumum non-parole period of 13 years.

Michael Hutchings, 18, was stabbed to death in January this year.

His body was found a week later in the Clutha River wrapped in a mattress cover and weighted with steel bars.

His killer, aged 38, and a woman, aged 30, who was sentenced to two years in prison for being an accessory to the murder, still have name suppression.

Both face trial on a separate matter later this year.

In the High Court at Dunedin, Justice Panckhurst said there was a real element of premeditation to the murder, and the subsequent attempt to dispose of the body was measured and planned.
