A Wellington production company has won New Zealand's first ever digital Emmy award.

KHF Media's interactive online series Reservoir Hill won the Children and Young People category at the International Digital Emmy Awards in Cannes, France, on Monday.

The weekly series, produced for Television New Zealand's OnDemand website, fought off competition from bigger-budget productions from Hong Kong, Canada and Britain.

The show's co-director, David Stubbs, says it was shot each week to incorporate text messages from viewers who were helping the lead actress.

Viewers could also communicate with the show's characters through social networking websites.
