Solicitor-General considers Liberty sentence appeal

3:16 pm on 13 April 2010

Crown Law has confirmed the Solicitor-General has been asked to consider appealing against the sentence handed down in the Liberty Templeman murder case.

Theo Kriel, who was 14 at the time he killed his Kerikeri school-mate, was given a mandatory life sentence with a non-parole period of 11.5 years.

Crown prosecutor Mike Smith argued that Kriel's actions were callous and depraved and warranted the maximum non-parole period possible in his case - 17 years.

A Crown Law Office spokesperson says the Solicitor-General will make his decision in about a week.

Legal sources say sentencing appeals by the Crown are rare and most requests are rejected.
