14 social service providers lose government contracts

The National Council for Women will have to look for new funding after the Ministry of Social Development ended its contract with the organisation.

In a newsletter sent out this week, the ministry said 14 social service providers wouldn't have their contracts renewed when they expire at the end of next month.

The contracts are worth about $374,000 combined, from a pool of $300 million the ministry gives to community social services each year.

The council has confirmed it is one of the providers whose contract is ending.

Its national president Rae Duff said the decision was disappointing but the contract was not the council's only source of funding.

The council will also be applying to a new $500,000 community leadership fund the government announced earlier this week.
