Watercare, the company that supplies water to Auckland, is asking residents to use water wisely amid predictions that dry weather causing droughts in some parts of the region will continue.
Papakura, Rodney, Manukau and Waikato have now joined Northland as official drought zones.
The company is producing as much water as possible from its Waikato water treatment plant in order to keep lake levels up.
Due to that and to high rainfall last winter, networks manager Mark Bourne says the lakes are only slightly below their normal level for this time of year.
While Aucklanders are not facing water restrictions at the moment, he says they need to reduce their current usage, to avoid them later.
Mr Bourne says forecasts suggest the dry weather will continue through Autumn.
If winter is also unseasonably dry, he says it will put strain on the region's water supplies next summer.
