A man has appeared in the Greymouth District Court charged with murder following a double shooting in Hokitika on Tuesday.
Frank Schist, 86, has been named on court documents as one of the victims and police say another murder charge will be laid once the second man has been positively identified.
The shootings happened at Mr Schist's home in Fitzherbert Street. Police say the accused is known to the family and it was not unusual for him to be at the house.
The 41-year-old accused has interim name suppression pending a psychiatric report. He appeared briefly in court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until next Tuesday.
Inspector John Canning says the situation is terrible for the family, especially for Joyce Schist, who was in hospital when her husband was shot.
Mr Canning says no-one else is being sought in connection to the deaths, but the public's help is still needed as it is not known what triggered the violence.
The bodies of the men will be removed from the house after forensic scientists have carried out an examination. Officers from Blenheim and Nelson are helping with the investigation.
