Price cutting at car parks

8:53 am on 8 October 2008

A drop in the number of commuters driving into downtown Auckland has led to price cutting at some big open-air carparks.

One commercial carpark operator has cut the daily rate at one site by $2 to $6, with a nearby rival offering $5 parking within a 15 minute walk of Queen Street.

Auckland City Council says there's been a significant drop in the number of cars coming into the downtown area each day as commuters switch to public transport.

Recent figures show an 11% cut in traffic over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and 900 fewer cars being brought in each day by university students.
