Centenary celebrations for the National Arboretum, near Gisborne, are taking place over Easter weekend.

Eastwoodhill Arboretum was established by farmer and tree enthusiast Douglas Cook in 1910.

On its 135 hectares, it contains more than 13,000 tree specimens and more than 3000 plant species.

Collection curator Paul Wynen says the celebrations will feature a tree planting by Governor General Anand Satyanand.

He says several hundred people are expected to attend the various centenary events over the Easter weekend.
