A man has been rescued from Te Urewera National Park after setting off an emergency locator beacon on Thursday afternoon.

The 50-year-old was picked up from a hut in the centre of the park suffering from severe cuts to his head and was flown to hospital about 6pm.

His location was confirmed by a fixed-wing aircraft which homed in on the beacon's signal to find two people waving for help from the hut.

Rescue Coordination Centre Officer Keith Allen said the successful rescue confirmed the value of carrying an emergency beacon in rugged terrain.
