A convicted double rapist who absconded from a house he had been sent to as part of parole conditions has been released into the community.

Maka Renata, 24, was sentenced in the Lower Hutt District Court on Thursday on one charge of breach of parole and one charge of unlawful possession of prescription medicine.

In November last year Renata was paroled to a rehabilitation programme run by the Salisbury Street Foundation in Christchurch, but left there on 23 December and was found in Lower Hutt in January.

Judge Peter Butler said a pre-sentence report identified Renata as being at high risk of reoffending and recommended intensive rehabilitation.

The judge sentenced Renata to 18 months' intensive supervision.
