Women injured in crash following police pursuit

11:36 am on 1 April 2010

Police in Waikato say they are waiting for a full report before commenting further on a police pursuit that ended with two women being injured in a crash.

The crash happened on State Highway 27, near Tahuna, on Wednesday night and follows another pursuit on Saturday, in which a man died after a collision with a van.

Police say in the latest pursuit, a young woman was pulled over and the officer who approached her thought that she smelt of alcohol.

They say the woman sped off and was pursued for about 40 seconds before she drove into an area of road works and lost control, crashing into the rear wheel of a truck and trailer unit.

The 19-year-old driver from Auckland and her female passenger suffered moderate injuries. The passenger remains in hospital with a broken hip.

The head of Waikato road policing, Inspector Leo Tooman, says no further information will be released until he has received a full report on the incident.

Police are also awaiting the results from blood tests and other analysis.

Meanwhile, witnesses to the weekend's fatal crash have come forward to help police build up a picture of what happened.

Police say that pursuit was abandoned after two minutes, and 10 seconds before the crash.
