Government increases load limit for trucks

6:55 am on 1 April 2010

The Government has announced heavier trucks will soon be allowed on the roads under a new permit system.

From May, heavy vehicle users can apply to operate above the current weight limit of 44 tonnes on specified routes.

Trucks will be permitted to carry up to 53 tonnes within their current dimensions.

There is provision to allow loads above that limit, but only in very specific instances.

The Government says allowing heavier trucks on the roads will increase gross domestic product by more than $150 million.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says allowing trucks to carry heavier loads will deliver gains for both the economy and other road users.

He says heavier loads will reduce congestion, operating costs, vehicle emissions and improve road safety.

He says the impact on the economy will be significant, even by conservative estimates.
