Funding stopped for driver programme

8:24 am on 30 September 2008

Manukau City Council is stopping funding for a programme designed to shock young traffic offenders into being better drivers.

Tactics used at the right track programme include a visit to the Otara spinal unit and a session where participants are seated in a wrecked car as the jaws of life are used to dismantle it.

The programme was established in South Auckland 18 months ago. Auckland City and Rodney District Councils have now picked it up.

Founder John Finch says 90% of participants do not re-offend and he claims the programme is saving lives in the Manukau region.

He says he can't understand why the council has pulled funding.
