Nelson celebrates 150 years as a city

8:15 am on 29 September 2008

Nelson celebrated its 150th anniversary as a city on Saturday with street entertainment and a giant birthday cake.

Queen Victoria conferred Nelson's city status in 1858, by virtue of it having a cathedral, even though the population then was only 5,000.

Celebrations centred on the cathedral and the Nelson City Council urged locals to dress up in period costume.

Celebrations continued throughout the weekend.
