MetService expects that strong winds of up to 110km per hour on hills around Wellington will ease on Wednesday afternoon.
Police advise driving conditions on State Highway Two, the Rimutaka Hill Road, between Wairarapa and the Hutt valley, are hazardous.
MetService says drivers should delay their trip until later in the afternoon if possible.
It says people driving motorcycles and high sided vehicles like trucks need to be cautious on the Rimutaka Hill road because of the strong winds.
