The potential new flag flying on Auckland's Harbour Bridge is coming down, after complaints the colour is not quite right.

Many Aucklanders have complained the flag is wrong because it appears to be a lighter blue than the correct darker shade.

Flag Consideration Panel chair John Burrows said a replacement flag would go up next week.

"I do understand people have said it's not the right colour, and up there it doesn't look it," he said.

"But in fact it is the right colour, it's just in those conditions it doesn't look quite right and we suspect it's the type of fabric as much as anything else."

The Kyle Lockwood-designed silver fern flag, the alternative to the current flag in the final referendum next month, has been up for two weeks.
