Wellington bus strike to go ahead

7:21 pm on 23 September 2008

Strike action by Wellington bus drivers will go ahead on Wednesday morning.

The action will disrupt services from Wellington railway station and the Karori terminus from 7.30am till 8.30am.

The Wellington Tramways Union says bus company Go Wellington withdrew its offer of a 7% pay rise in talks on Tuesday.

The union wants an increase of between 8% and 12% for the 311 drivers, saying their pay was in effect cut last year when the company limited working hours.

Go Wellington says health and safety concerns were largely behind the cut in hours.

The union's president, Nick Kelly, says Go Wellington has the funds to cover its demand and to avoid strike action.
