No pets rule remains

Rules to keep pets out of pensioner flats in Wanganui will remain, despite a public petition.

Last month, two elderly residents were caught flouting the rules by having dogs in their Talbot Street flats.

A petition signed by nearly 2000 people supported Enid Titter and her neighbour.

But Wanganui District Council members decided unanimously on Monday that the rules will stay, after a survey showed four out of five council flat residents don't want cats or dogs in the properties.

Mayor Michael Laws says he some sympathy for the situation, but the policy must be guided by residents' views.
