A memorial to murdered German backpacker Birgit Brauer has been unveiled at Awanui cemetery in New Plymouth.
The 28-year-old tourist was killed at Lucy's Gully on 20 September 2005.
Michael Wallace, 46, is serving a life sentence for her killing, with no chance of parole for 18 years.
Among the 50 people gathered at the ceremony were police officers from the investigation team, German embassy officials, and members of Rotary who hosted Ms Brauer's parents during court proceedings.
In an email Birgit Brauer's parents said they felt enormously moved by the sympathy and compassion shown by the dedication of the memorial.
The stone memorial contains an inscription and greenstone heart that match those on Ms Brauer's headstone in Germany. A magnolia of the same type that grew in her garden was planted nearby.
Among the wreaths laid at the memorial was a white rose, and Ms Brauer's family also planned to lay a white rose on her grave in Germany on Saturday.
