Canterbury people will be paying more for Meals on Wheels from November.
Canterbury District Health Board is increasing the cost of the meals from $3.80 in Christchurch, and $3.30 in rural areas, to $5.20, due to the rise in the price of food and fuel.
Health board general manager Trevor English says the board will liaise with groups to ensure the significant increase does not cause hardship to the more than 1,000 meal recipients.
Mr English says the increase is the first since 2000, and is needed to so the service can avoid a $200,000 loss this financial year.
Grey Power's Christchurch president, Colin Taylor, says the increase is "savage" and recipients will become unwell if they can't afford to eat.
Mr Taylor wants the Government to offset the increased cost with more funding.
