The estranged husband of a disabled woman who is starving herself in a Wellington rest home has accused her carers of doing nothing to dissuade her actions.
Margaret Page, 60, suffered an aneurism two decades ago and was moved into a care home in Wellington in 2006.
Ten days ago, she began refusing food and has indicated her wish to die.
Barry Page says his wife decided to stop eating because an ill-fitting wheelchair was causing her pain, something that went ignored by carers.
Mr Page says this was just one of a series of events that caused Mrs Page to become despondent.
He says he has no doubt his wife would change her mind if she was given a different type of care.
The rest home, Maddison House, says it cannot force Mrs Page to eat.
Chief executive Ralph la Salle says a patient has a right to choose and the home's duty is to support that.
