Iranian teen to stay in New Zealand

The 13-year-old son of an Iranian refugee has been refused asylum - but will not be sent back to live with his father and undertake compulsory military service.

His mother said he would be beaten by his father, with whom he had not lived since he was two years old.

The Immigration and Protection Tribunal has ruled the father's discipline - and the Islamic regime to which the boy would return - were not sufficient reasons for him to be classed as a refugee.

But it has accepted the teenager's appeal against deportation on humanitarian grounds, and has granted him a resident's visa.
