A Christchurch man has avoided going to jail after killing another man when he drove drunk.

Nathan King, 28, was killed instantly when Daniel Wheeler's truck hit his vehicle head-on.

Wheeler, who is 31, on Friday was sentenced to one year of home detention on a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.

He had been drinking after his mother's funeral and was found to be two-and-a-half times over the legal breath-alcohol limit.

Wheeler had pleaded guilty to the charge.
