A New Zealand rafting company has been fined over the death of a Norwegian trainee guide on a river in the central North Island.
Tor Prestmo became trapped when the raft he was leading collided with another raft in a rapid on the Rangitikei River in 2007.
River Valley Ventures, based in Taihape, has been fined $30,000 in the Palmerston North District Court and must also pay the victim's family $60,000 in reparation.
It was the first time that Mr Prestmo, 24, had led a commercial trip which carried five people - all of whom survived.
Judge Gregory Ross said the business had failed to take all practicable steps to protect the guide's safety.
Its owner and senior rafting guide were discharged by the court.
River Valley Ventures has a web page devoted to Mr Prestmo and says it sincerely hopes it is the only tribute to a victim it ever has to write.
