Police investigate alleged rort at Housing NZ

Housing New Zealand has asked police to investigate allegations one of its staff members offered state houses for money.

The corporation has finished an internal investigation launched after it appeared people were skipping the queue for houses.

Chief executive Lesley McTurk says there are 31 suspicious cases and a criminal investigation needs to be considered. She says they all relate to one staff member.

Ms McTurk says it appears some people have been given homes more quickly than they should have been, and therefore displaced others with a greater need.

She says Housing New Zealand will now investigate tenants and those who acquired their houses dishonestly may lose them.
