Waikato waterways, soil 'deteriorating'

9:06 pm on 10 September 2008

The health of waterways and soil in Waikato is deteriorating, according to a report by Waikato Regional Council.

The report says about three-quarters of all monitored streams and rivers may be unsafe to swim in and unsafe for stock to drink from.

It also shows that continuing use of phosphate fertilisers has, in some soils, led to a gradual build-up of cadmium and fluorine, which could have long-term implications for future land use versatility.

Council spokesperson Peter Singleton says nutrient leaching and run-off from farms are responsible for the deterioration.

Dr Singleton says many people in Waikato are unaware there is even a problem.
