Auckland Regional Council has voted in favour of installing cycling and walking lanes on the harbour bridge.
The vote is said to have been narrow because some councilors were concerned at the price tag, estimated at between $23 and $42 million.
It follows Auckland City Council's decision last week to reject the proposal because of the cost, despite initially backing the idea.
However, the regional council's transport committee chairwoman, Christine Rose, says Auckland City Council's U-turn will not leave the project dead in the water.
Ms Rose says Auckland Regional Transport Authority has the final say and it will judge the proposal on its merits.
