Zimbabwe MP questions reasons to delay cricket tour

2:58 pm on 16 March 2010

A prominent Zimbabwe MP believes New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has not given a good reason for the decision to postpone a tour of his country.

NZC has blamed the collapse of Zimbabwe's health system and the security situation as reasons for delaying the tour, which had been scheduled for June this year.

NZC is suggesting that the tour be deferred until mid-2011 or shifted to a neutral venue, but is waiting to hear from Zimbabwe Cricket.

The tour was postponed last year due to political instability in Zimbabwe.

A founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change party, Eddie Cross, told Morning Report that Zimbabwe is starting to put its cricket house in order with an administration free from politics and it is a shame the Black Caps won't meet his country's team on the field.

Mr Cross says there is no security threat to the side.

However, if NZC had mentioned Zimbabwe's political uncertainty and economic collapse as reasons for not touring, he says he might have accepted that as more justifiable reasons.

A former Zimbabwe High Court judge living in New Zealand is calling for cricket officials to reverse the decision.

Benjamin Paradza says the situation in Zimbabwe has changed and there is no real reason why the Black Caps should not play there. He believes New Zealand has missed an opportunity to rekindle diplomatic relations.

PM supports Cricket NZ decision

Prime Minister John Key says he supports NZC's decision, saying it has taken the responsible course of action in considering the safety and security of players.

Mr Key says there are also some political issues in Zimbabwe, but some progress has been made on that front.

The Cricket Players Association is also backing the postponement, saying safety and health issues in Zimbabwe are simply too great.
