Interference claim over checkpoint delay

2:19 pm on 14 March 2010

A senior police officer has been accused of abusing his power by taking another officer to task for stopping his friend at a police checkpoint.

An article in the Police Association's magazine says the officer complained to the local road policing manager about the delay caused to his friend, a former police officer.

The column, called View from the Bottom, was written by an anonymous frontline police officer and raises concerns about former officers interferring with standard police procedures.

The national manager for road policing, Superintendent Paula Rose, says police are often asked about delays caused by checkpoints.

She says the stops can be modified to reduce delays, but it is irrelevant who in the police force makes this happen.
